Statistics Canada says population growth in Canada essentially stopped in the third quarter due to COVID-19. Canada’s population was estimated at just over 38 million on October 1st. That was up less than three thousand from July 1st. In six provinces, the population actually decreased for the first time since at least the third quarter of 1951. The largest declines were in British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Saskatchewan lost the most people through inter-provincial migration, dropping 2,774. Saskatchewan has had net inter-provincial migration losses since the third quarter of 2013.
