The five week trial for a man charged in the death of his wife which was scheduled to begin on Monday at Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench has been adjourned and rescheduled to begin in September.
Sheree Fertuck was last seen leaving her family’s farm east of Kenaston in December of 2015.
The semi she was driving was found at a local gravel pit.
Her estranged husband, Greg Fertuck was arrested and charged with first degree murder and indignity to human remains in June of 2019.
Justice Richard Danyliuk says it’s a complex case, which because of COVID-19 and the rise in variant cases in the Regina area and the health directives discouraging travel, the decision was made to postpone the trial.
At a teleconference with counsel and Greg Fertuck, the defence sought an adjournment and waived the effects of any delay under the Charter.
The Crown preferred to proceed in some fashion, but after review, the Justice decided to adjourn the trial.
Danyliuk explains that many witnesses would have to travel from the Regina area, so he says ignoring the risks would be foolhardy.
