The province has updated its captive wildlife regulations to provide more clarity around what types of animals are allowed and what aren’t allowed in Saskatchewan.
Environment Minister Warren Kaeding says the growing interest in exotic wildlife as pets and the rehabilitation of native species has raised concerns for public safety, animal welfare and maintaining the province’s ecosystems.
There are 2 sections to the restricted list.
Division 1 species include, as examples, falcons, owls, monkeys, wolves, bobcats, bears and bats.
This wildlife in the group are either considered overtly dangerous, or they have never been legal pets in Saskatchewan.
The Environment Ministry says they must be removed by November 30th, either by shipping them out of the province, transferring them to a licensed facility, or through human euthanization.
Division 2 species are animals that are currently pets, and may be kept for the remaining life of the animal, but only if the Environment Ministry is notified.
They include crows, magpies, certain parrots and macaws, snowshoe hares, squirrels and turtles.
