Storm activity in Saskatchewan was widespread on Thursday evening. Our radio listeners are reporting damage in places like Shell Lake, Debden, and Middle Lake. Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Terri Lang says, “There’s some bigger storms to the north. Lloydminster had quite a bit of pea sized hail and some pretty strong wind gusts, up to 87 kilometres per hour. Some golf ball sized hail in Loon Lake as well so that one storm went through and just from everything, you know, what we can see from the satellite picture, we know there was some really big storms in northern Saskatchewan.”
Lang says rain in Thursday night’s storms was highly variable in terms of amounts. She says if you were lucky enough to get under a cloud there was a fair bit but, for instance, in Saskatoon there was just a big blast of wind. Some of the larger rainfall amounts included Indian Head at 33.8 millimetres, Gavin at 33.8 and Vibank at 17.8. She says rain fall amounts in Regina were not consistent because volunteer weather reporters didn’t come in amounts close to the 19.8 millimetres at the airport.
Lang says Regina reported a wind gust of 141 kilometres an hour and appeared to do quite a bit of damage in the northwest part of the city including their Ribfest even which is taking today off to clean up. Grain bins were knocked over Debden, a pontoon was flipped at Attons Lake Regional Park and hail reports have come in from multiple locations including at a Middle Lake, Shell Lake and Sturgeon Lake Regional Park.
