Many Francophones Upset the New Governor General Isn’t Tri-Lingual

While most of the rest of the country is celebrating the appointment of Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General, many in Quebec are upset that Mary Simon doesn’t speak French. She is bilingual, but in English and Inuktitut. In an Angus Reid survey, 74 per cent of people outside Quebec agree with Simon’s appointment, even considering the English-French bilingualism issue. Only 11 per cent said they didn’t agree with the appointment. 16 per cent weren’t sure. In Quebec, 49 per cent favoured the appointment, 35 per cent opposed and 16 per cent weren’t sure.
Within Quebec, 81 per cent of Anglophones agree with the appointment compare width only 40 per cent of Francophones.
