A La Ronge man has been sentenced to a 30-month probation in relation to a charge of fraud over $5,000 dollars.

In July 2014, La Loche RCMP received a report of fraudulent activity committed by the former General Manager of the Clearwater River Dene First Nation between 2008 and 2011.

An audit revealed a loss of over a million dollars to the First Nation.

In 2020, 63-year-old Johnny Cheecham was charged in connection to the incident.

For the first 12 months of the probation, Cheecham must abide by a curfew, notify the court of any name change, keep the peace and log community service hours. Cheecham was sentenced on Friday at the Court of Queen’s Bench in North Battleford.
