If they didn’t surpass two million total dollars raised Thursday morning, they came pretty darn close!
After having the last two Dog’s Breakfasts cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20th edition was held Thursday morning at Prairieland Park with the usual throng of about 1,500 supporters noshing and being pumped up for the 2022 U of S football season. As a result, the function raised $110-thousand towards scholarship monies for Huskie football student-athletes while the Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation kicked in another $140,000. Whether that’s added on to or is included in the $1.8 million raised in total since the event began in 2001, this is the biggest fund-raiser for Scott Flory’s program. Quarterback Cody Fajardo, receiver Shaq Evans, centre Dan Clark, place kicker Brett Lauther and U of S alumnus and O-Lineman Evan Johnson were among the present day members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in attendance, along with the four members of the 2007 Grey Cup-champion Riders as special guests…Andy Fantuz, Scott Schultz, Tad Kornegay and present-day Roughriders’ G-M Jeremy O’Day.
Meanwhile, the Dog’s Breakfast was the kickoff to a rest of the month of May of football activity at Griffiths Stadium. The defending Hardy Cup champions start their Spring Camp Thursday night at 6 o’clock, running throughout the rest of the week until the Green and White scrimmage game Sunday at 11 a.m. Then, following a few days to catch a breath, the Saskatchewan Roughriders come in with a three-day rookie camp starting next Wednesday and main training camp, ahead of the 2022 C-F-L season, beginning on Sunday.
