With their next home game two weeks away, the Saskatoon Berries gave their Cairns Field fans something very positive to remember them by with a 19-4 triumph over the Weyburn Beavers Sunday afternoon.
The Berries scored nine runs in the first inning, three in the second and two more runs in the third inning to jump out to a 14-0 lead with the help of 15 hits. Left fielder McGwire Turner added a cherry on top of the offensive outburst with a grand slam home run in the sixth inning as Saskatoon improved to 16-18 for the season and finished a busy stretch of 10 games in eight days with a 6-4 mark. The Berries play their next nine games on the road, starting Tuesday in Fort McMurray. Their next home game is Monday, July 22, when Weyburn returns to complete a suspended game from June 21 and then play a regularly-scheduled contest. The Beavers dropped to 7-26 for the season with their losing streak reaching 16 games as starting pitcher Ethan Webster suffered the brunt of Saskatoon’s offensive onslaught. Berries’ lefty E-J Miramontes allowed one run on three hits over five innings to record the pitching victory.
