A permanent, 50-bed emergency shelter is opening up in Regina on Monday.
Titled ‘New Beginnings’, the City-owned shelter is located at 1600 Halifax Street and will be managed and operated by Regina Treaty/Status Indian Services.
The shelter is funded through $3 million from the Federal Transit and Housing Fund, $1.1 million of capital funding from the Federal Government’s Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampment Initiative and up to $3 million from the Government of Saskatchewan as a forgivable loan. The total cost of the shelter is $6.8 million, and $1 million dollars of the existing annual City budget will go towards ongoing operational costs.
The facility will operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week on a first-come, first-served basis. Clients will have access to shelter, three meals per day, case planning services and access to wrap-around support to address wellness and cultural needs.
