A 44-year-old Saskatoon man is facing assault charges after allegedly assaulting an officer who was trying to arrest him.
Police were called to an establishment on 21st Street East around 4 p.m. Wednesday in response to a report that a man was refusing to leave and threatening staff members. Police said the man refused to comply with the officer’s commands and punched the officer in the head. In a news release police say the man then “forcefully removed the officer’s bike helmet and began striking him with it.”
Police say the officer fought back first with a baton and pepper spray. And later made the arrest after deploying a conducted energy weapon, when the man allegedly raised what is described as a large metal stool and tried to hit the officer with it.
The suspect is charged with assault on a police officer engaged in lawful duties, assault on a police officer with intent to resist, and assault with a weapon. The officer wasn’t injured.
