Considering the difficulty of their upcoming schedule, the Saskatoon Blades earned two points that they had to get Wednesday night when they upended the road-weary Victoria Royals 3-1 at SaskTel Centre.
Hayden Harsanyi (pictured) scored the go-ahead goal with 4:16 remaining in the third period, while the teams were playing four skaters aside, as the Bridge City Bunch improved to 23-16-4 for the season. Meanwhile, Evan Gardner bounced back from being pulled in the first period in the Blue and Gold’s last game by stopping 23 of 24 shots. At the other end, Victoria’s Ethan Eskit was just as solid, and busier as he stopped 32 of 34 shots. Cooper Williams scored a power play goal for the Blades while Tristen Doyle tallied into an empty net. Doyle added an assist while David Lewandowski chipped in two helpers. The joy of victory was tempered by word that veteran Saskatoon defenceman Jordan Martin suffered an Upper Body injury that will sideline him for a long term. The Bridge City Bunch’s 50 points leaves them in sixth place in the W-H-L’s Eastern Conference, but only one point back of, both, Brandon and Calgary. However, the Hitmen have two games in hand on both the Wheat Kings and the Blue and Gold. As for their upcoming schedule, six of the next seven games for the Blades are against four of the five teams ahead of them in the Conference table – at Edmonton, home to Calgary plus home-and-home with Medicine Hat and Prince Albert. First up, Saskatoon hosts the Tigers Friday at 7 o’clock at SaskTel Centre.
