An unwritten rule of hockey is that, as a team, you try to avoid allowing goals in the first two minutes and last two minutes of any period as those goals tend to give the opposition momentum. The Saskatoon Blades didn’t do a good enough job of following that unwritten rule in falling 6-3 Saturday night to the Pats in Regina.

The Bridge City Bunch surrendered the opening goal, on Regina’s first shot on goal, just over two minutes into the contest; allowed a tying goal with 34 seconds left in the first period plus the eventual winning goal just 13 seconds into the third period. For a second straight game against the Pats, the Blue and Gold were victimized by 15-year-old centre Maddox Schultz. His two goals, plus an assist, gave him first star honours – although Marek Schlenker had to be dialed in to stop 38 of 41 Blades’ shots. Only Hunter Laing, Jordan Martin and Rowan Calvert could solve Schlenker. Laing and Calvert added assists on each other’s tallies. It was Saskatoon’s first loss in five visits to Regina. With only seven games left in the regular season, the 30-25-6 Bridge City Bunch appear destined to finish in sixth place in the W-H-L’s Eastern Conference. The Blue and Gold are five points back of fifth place Brandon, who have two games in hand. The Blades’ next action is a Wednesday home game against Red Deer.
