All Classes are Being Cancelled – Now Seven Cases of COVID-19

Dr. Saqib Shahab says there are now 7 cases of COVID-19 in the Saskatchewan. The province’s Chief Medical Health Officer also says because Canada is urging residents to come home there will be a spike in number of cases as those people return to Canada. The resident is in their 60s with recent travel from Arizona. The resident was tested in Regina and is currently in hospital due to unrelated medical issues. Public Health officials say you will be notified if you are a close contact with this individual and maybe need to take further measures due to being at risk of developing COVID-19. You will be notified if you are a close contact and need to take further measures.

All classes in Saskatchewan from pre-K to grade 12 will be suspended indefinitely effective March 20th. From today (mon) until March 19th, all of these classes will wind down. Parents who are able to keep children at home should do so immediately with no absence or grade impacts. Parents with limited childcare options have a window to plan for the suspensions. Every student will receive a final grade based on their current grade and students will progress to the next grade level next year. Every student who is eligible to graduate grade 12 this year will graduate. The government will work with Saskatchewan Post-Secondary institutions to adapt entry requirements for program beginning in the next academic year.

Teachers and staff can work from home or in schools as scheduled during the class cancellations. For the rest of the school year, plans will be worked out to implement supplemental programs through distance and alternative learning methods. These supplemental programs will have no impact on final grades.

These measures apply to daycares that are co-located with schools, but do not apply to licenced daycare facilities outside of schools. Further measures concerning licenced daycares are being considered. Officials are examining options to provide childcare services for individuals who are providing essential services.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Saskatchewan Polytechnic is cancelling all of its classes and programming for the remainder of this week. Programs will be offered on line or through alternate deliver options where possible. Saskatchewan Polytechnic is making the move to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The campuses are not closing. The fitness centres will remain closed until further notice. More information will be provided to students and employees regarding on line or alternative delivery.
