SGI says Driver inattention and distraction will be the focus of the Traffic Safety Spotlight in October. Distracted driving contributed to 16 deaths and more than 4,500 accidents in this province last year. Distracted driving is good for a $580 ticket and four demerit points for a first offence. Penalties increase for repeat offences. On average, police have caught more than 500 distracted drivers every month this year.
