Riders Sign Big Defensive Lineman Lanier II

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed a defensive lineman whose first career N-F-L quarterback sack was against New Orleans and Drew Brees in 2016.

Anthony Lanier II will be at the Green and White’s 2021 training camp after five years in the N-F-L. The 6’6″, 285-pound Georgia product was not selected in the 2016 N-F-L Draft, but was signed by Washington. He spent two years there before signing for two seasons with the L-A Chargers. In 2020, Lanier spent time with, both, Kansas City and the Saints. Following is the news release from the Riders…..

RIDERS SIGN AMERICAN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN ANTHONY LANIER II

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II.

Lanier II (6’6-285lbs) joins the Riders after spending the last five seasons in the NFL. He was initially signed by the Washington Football Team as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He went onto play 15 career games with the Club, making ten tackles, five sacks, five tackles for a loss, six passes defended, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. His first career sack was against quarterback Drew Brees. In 2018, Lanier signed with the Los Angeles Chargers where he stayed for two seasons. The Georgia native spent portions of 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints.

Collegiately, Lanier played for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. As a senior in 2015, he made 29 tackles, six tackles for a loss, three sacks, one forced fumble, four quarterback hurries and one pass break-up over eight games. He was also named team captain. As a junior, he was second on the team in tackles with 54 while adding 18 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Lanier was a two-sport athlete, also suiting up for the Bulldogs’ basketball team.
