It’s an opportunity for Saskatoon seniors to keep fit while helping to save lives and fight malaria. All Senior Care Living Centres “Pedal to the Metal” will see Preston Park One and Two residents take 27 virtual biking tours in 23 days.
Ronna Goldberg, National Event Planner, says seniors will use stationary bikes or pedal exerciser’s to take virtual trips through countries effected by malaria. She says they will put down the mileage in those countries and they’re asking family and friends to sponsor riders or make a donation. Goldberg says riders will go through India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Turkey before ending up the journey in Thailand.
Goldberg, says they teamed up with the Against Malaria Foundation, an organization that provides mosquito nets to malaria-endemic countries. Goldberg explains one net costs $2.50 and if a senior can raise $600 that can cover an entire village of people. She states malaria is so preventable with these mosquito nets and proceeds will likely be going to people in need in the Congo.
