The federal government has launched the country’s first 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan intended to build a more inclusive future.
OUTSaskatoon’s executive director, Krystal Nieckar says she would like to see housing for the 2SLGBTQI+ community be addressed in the action plan.
“You know our homeless and underhoused population in Saskatoon and I’m sure throughout the, I can’t speak for the entire province, but I’m sure through the entire province, is growing and it’s becoming, you know it’s becoming an epidemic.”
Ottawa has set aside $100 million dollars over five years for the action plan which includes $5.6 million on developing and implementing awareness campaigns that focus on breaking down stigma and ending discrimination for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians along with $35 million set aside for new project-focused support aimed at addressing specific barriers to 2SLGBTGI+ equality.
The action plan also has dollars set aside for support Indigenous 2SLGBTQI+ resilience and resurgence by including by continuing to fund Indigenous peoples in the community and by placing “2S” to represent Two-Spirit people at the front of the 2SLGBTQI+ acronym.
