Berries Clinch First Place in W-C-B-L’s East Division While Collecting Their 40th Win

By Les Lazaruk Jul 26, 2025 | 10:34 PM

Check off another couple of boxes in the list of 2025 goals for the Saskatoon Berries!

The home team spotted the visiting Moose Jaw Miller-Express a 3-1 lead through three-and-a-half innings, only to score five runs over their next four times at bat, to record a 6-4 triumph Saturday night. The result means the Berries are the first Western Canadian Baseball League team to reach 40 wins for the season while clinching a first place finish in the East Division with nine games remaining to play. Saskatoon’s bullpen came through in front of 2,175 fans at Cairns Field, as Klevert Martina, Colin Plain and Tanner Hosick combined to limit Moose Jaw to an unearned run on three singles over the final five-and-a-third innings after starter Robert Bonilla left in the fourth frame with an injury. Offensively, centre fielder Carter Beck and designated hitter Ethan Menard each had three hits and a run batted in while catcher Rudy Gonzalez scored twice. The Berries improved to 40-7 with their sixth straight win, which happened with pitching coach Ryan Olchoway running the bench as head coach Joe Carnahan and assistant coach Chance Wheatley were suspended by the W-C-B-L for an incident on Friday in Swift Current. Other goals being chased by Saskatoon are a first place overall finish – they have a Magic Number of three over the West Division-leading Okotoks Dawgs to achieve it – plus the most wins in a regular season and the best winning percentage in a season. A likely scenario is a first round playoff meeting between the Berries and the Miller-Express, now 21-27 for the season and in fourth place in the East Division – a re-match of last year’s East Division final that the Miller-Express won in three games. Saskatoon visits Moose Jaw Sunday afternoon – the eighth and final head-to-head meeting between them with the Berries having won six of seven to date. Saskatoon’s next home game is Tuesday when they open a two-game series at Cairns Field against the Weyburn Beavers. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with Olchoway, Martina and third baseman Mason Roell plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L website…..
